Dental Crowns

What you need to know about dental crowns

If your dentist has mentioned crowning one of your teeth, they are not referring to royalty in any way.  A dental crown may visually change a damaged tooth from a pauper to a prince, but improving your smile is just one advantage to your oral health that crowns provide.

Let’s look at some reasons that you might need a dental crown, as well as the different options available.

What are Dental Crowns?

Also referred to as dental caps, a crown is a dental prosthetic that is fitted over an existing tooth to prevent further damage, improve the tooth’s appearance, and add strength to the existing tooth.

They can also be used in dental bridges and with implants to restore missing teeth.  Dental crowns are commonly constructed from metal, porcelain, or ceramic.

Signs You Need a Dental Crown

Both children and adults can benefit from dental crowns. Children may need a dental crown if their back teeth are prone to dental decay due to improper oral hygiene.

Adults may need a dental crown to help them keep more of their existing teeth, prevent the need for tooth extractions, or to fill in missing teeth.

Your dentist may advise a dental crown for several other reasons:

  1. You may have a severely damaged tooth due to dental decay that will not hold a filling.
  2. Your tooth has or needs a root canal and would not be stable without the addition of a crown.
  3. Your tooth is too small, and a crown would improve its aesthetic appearance.
  4. You have one or more teeth that have excessive wear due to teeth grinding or other factors.
  5. Your tooth is at an increased risk for dental decay.
  6. You have one or more missing teeth that need to be replaced.

Whatever the reason, when your dentist decides a crown is the best option, know that a crown will not only make a positive impact on your smile, but will also make chewing food easier, lessen the risk of bone loss, and add strength & prevent further issues with a damaged tooth.

Types of Crowns

Your dentist may offer traditional crowns or Cerec crowns. The type of crown you receive will depend on your specific circumstances and preferences.

If the time comes when you need a crown, your dentist will help you understand all of the options, and explain the best choice for your situation.

Once installed, a dental crown becomes an important component of your overall oral health.  A dental crown is a royal addition, indeed!
